1 - La Paz - Sorata (2700m/8.858ft)
We leave La Paz around 08h00 for Sorata, a small village at the bottom of a green valley by the foot of the imposing Illampu (6368m/20.892ft). If the weather permits we can clearly see the snow clad summit from the main square in Sorata. Hotel. Distance: 150km/93mi. Transport: 3h30.

2 - Sorata - Lacatiya (3900m/12.795ft)
After breakfast we meet our team of muledrivers just outside Sorata. Our trek starts with a long ascend to Estancia de Lacatiya which will be our first camp. The Illampu is practically overhanging us with its 6368m/20.892ft all day. Camping. Trek: 6h. Elevation: +1200m, +3.937ft. B/L/D

3 - Lacatiya - Paso Illampu – Estancia Utjaña Pampa (3900m/12.795ft)
We start early by hiking to the Illampu mountain pass at 4750m/15.584ft from where we can see the north peak of the Illampu (6370m/20.899ft) and the Schulze Peak (5950m/19.521ft). We then walk down the northeast slope of the Illampu until the Estancia Utjaña Pampa. In this area you can find plenty small gold mines that are still exploited. Camping. Trek: 6h. Elevation: +/-850m, +/-2.789ft. B/L/D

4 - Estancia Utjaña Pampa - Aguas Calientes (4200m/13.780ft)
In the morning we start by following the river Janq´u Uma (White Waters). We then ascend to the base camp of the Illampu, called “Aguas Calientes” (Warm Waters). Camping. Trek: 6h. Elevation: +400m/-100m, +1.312ft/-328ft. B/L/D

5 - Aguas Calientes - High Camp (5500m/18.045ft)
From Aguas Calientes we climb to the High Camp at 5500m/18.045ft. It takes approximately 5 hours and we set up camp here for the night. Camping. Trek: 5h. Elevation: +1300m, +4.265ft. B/L/D

6 - High Camp – Summit Attempt (6368m/20.892ft) – Aguas Calientes The ascent of the Illampu takes around 8 hours and is undertaken on rock face and ice. The descent to the high camp at Aguas Calientes takes another 5 hours where we can relax. Camping. Ascend: 13h00. Elevation: +868m, +2.848ft. B/L/D

7 - Aguas Calientes - Laguna Glaciar (5038m/16.529ft) - Laguna Chilata (4200m/13.780ft)
While our mules are walking slowly down to our evening camp we set forth on a trail leading to the Laguna Glaciar. This lake, surrounded by the giants Illampu and Ancohuma, and where the glaichers fall into its waters, offers us a beautiful view on the Lake Titicaca and the valley of Sorata. We then walk down to the Laguna Chilata, to our camp. Camping. Trek: 6h. Elevation: +/-850m, +/-2.789ft. B/L/D

8 - Laguna Chilata - Sorata - La Paz
We walk down to Sorata in the morning and in the afternoon the car takes us back to La Paz (3-4hrs). Hotel. Trek: 4h. Elevation: -1500m, -4.921ft. B

• This ascend can be combined with the ascends of the Ancohuma or the Pico Del Norte.
  
• Trek: You can integrate the trek of the Ancohuma (6/7 days) or Illampu (5 days). If you are interested in another trek please see our here
